About Netherfield Forum
The St Georges Centre opened its doors on March 3rd 2005 with the Rt. Hon Alan Millburn MP. St George's Centre is a Community Centre in the heart of Netherfield dedicated to supporting the community of Netherfield through community work and education.
The History of Netherfield Forum & St Georges Centre
Netherfield's decline since the 1960s
Netherfield is an area that has been in social and economic decline since the closure of Europe's largest marshaling yard in 1967. The yard was the major local employer and economic generator, providing jobs for over 70% of local workforce. By the 90's, close to a quarter of the population were unemployed. The area historically has been characterised by:
-
physical dereliction,
-
poor health (double the rate of typical emergency admissions in the health authority area)
-
poor basic skills in numeracy and literacy
-
a high level of deprivation
-
a lack of quality open green space.
In 1996 a group of local residents decided to take action to galvanise support for a sustained regeneration initiative to bring life back to the town and The Netherfield Forum was formed. In January 1998 the Forum held a conference to agree a collective vision for the regeneration of Netherfield and to secure the commitment from local people, statutory bodies and local groups to deliver it. With Lottery funding amongst other major funders and with the successful partnership working of public, private, voluntary and statutory agencies spearheaded by resident involvement at its heart the St Georges Centre was built.

2022
In April 2021, we announced we had received the keys to the New Loco Centre, on Forester Street. Since then we have been through a long process of making alterations to the building to create new and friendly surroundings for all.
In January 2022 we opened the doors to all our groups and hope they enjoy their new surroundings. We still have some alterations to do and hope to have a fully refurbished centre by the end of March 2022.
All refurbishments have now been completed and our official opening of the Loco Centre is on 14th October 2022. To be opened by Lord & Lady Coaker.
